English Grammar Lesson 1: Simple Sentence Structure in English - SVO, SVC

There are several sentence structures in the English language for you to make up a sentence. The same idea can be put in different structures.

SVO Sentence Structure

SVO is structure is one of the most commonly used sentence structure in the English.

S stands for the SUBJECT of the sentence. Subject is the person or the thing that does the action in the sentence or what the verb is about.

V stands for the VERB of the sentence. Verb is the action that is carried out by the subject of the sentence or the what connects the subject to the complement (adjectives or other extra information about the subject).

O stands for the OBJECT of the sentence. Object is the person or the thing that is affected by the action of the subject. Not all sentences should necessarily have an object; it is added if there is one. Sentences with intransitive verbs, for one, will have no object.

SVO Sentence Structure -Takeaway

When you write a sentence in English, you need to make sure that you have put the subject before the verb, followed by the verb and the subject later.

Sentence Examples for SVO Sentence Structures

  • I ate pizza (Subject= I/ Verb= ate/ Object= pizza)
  • John is smart. (Subject= John/ Verb= is/ Object= NO OBJECT)
  • I slept. (Subject= I/ Verb= slept/ Object= NO OBJECT)

SVC Sentence Structure

SVC is another common sentence structure. In SVC, there will be no object; instead, there will be an object complement in the form of an adjective or a prepositional phrase.

Subject + Verb + Complement

Here, the verb will be a linking verb. A linking verb is a non-action verb; it can only connect the subject to the complement; it can simply be replaced by is/am/are/was/were. The BE's forms are just one category of linking verbs. All sensory verbs, such as look, feel, taste, smell, sound, appear, etc., are linking verbs too.

  • She is nice.
  • This food tastes good.
  • That sounds strange.
